Republicans
Republicans formed on 1854, they dominated the Northern regions of the United States and they were formed on the idea of strong federalism and a strict interpretation of the constitution and partly due to the reason to abolish slavery. They wanted to protect the economy of the North. Despite loosing the Election of 1856, the Republican Party showed shocking support for being a new political party. In the Presidential Election of 1860, the Republican Party nominated Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln stated that he would allow slavery in the states where it was currently relative and only stop the prevention of it. The party constantly got into conflict with the Democrats because of their difference in opinion.

Democrats
The Democratic Party was formed in 1792 in support of Thomas Jefferson's views, it was largely supported in the south. In the mid 1800's the party was divided on the issue of slavery. In general, they wanted to protect the state right to slavery in states and any future territories out West. During the 1860 Presidential Election, the party split into two different factions. The northern Democrats supported popular sovereignty and nominated Stephen A. Douglas for his views on popular sovereignty. They believed that states should be able to decide whether they legalized slavery or not. The Democrats in the deep south were pro-slavery. They thought that states had a right to slavery and any new states that might arise. They nominated John C. Breckinridge for his support on slavery
